The Unlock Programme has been developed by the Fashion Pact and 2050 to ‘unlock’ barriers to decarbonising cotton and raw materials production, and aims to provide a game-changing catalyst for increased adoption of lower climate impact and regenerative farming practices globally.

It does this by supporting farmers to identify and implement practice changes, quantifying the actual GHG impact (and other impact) of these changing practices, and issuing additional, outcomes-based financial incentives to farmers called ‘Unlock Units’. The system is designed to align with all best practices around claims and reporting, with the purpose of allowing participating companies to report under SBTi, SBTN, CSRD and other key mechanisms.

Unlock is designed to address key industry challenges, including:

Quantifying GHG benefits from better practices at the level of each farm and field - as well as quantifying benefits for biodiversity, water, soil and farmer livelihoods.

Providing early additional incentives to farmers to apply improved practices and technologies - ultimately increasing farmer resilience and making more sustainable materials available in the market.

Supporting brands in connecting to farmers and making credible scope 3 claims, and aligning the industry in a shared approach.

Providing technical support and expertise to stakeholders across the industry, helping navigate and shape the emerging space of supply chain GHG and biodiversity impact claims.

Unlock has now completed its pilot phase, and will include 10-15 thousand farmers in its transition growing season of 2024. This transition includes its move to be housed within Future Earth Lab, a registered charity that will take forward the development and delivery of Unlock.
